The first thing that Shin'ichi noticed upon beginning to stir to consciousness was the light making the insides of his eyelids glow red. The second thing he noticed—upon opening them—was that said light was actually red, and he was lying in a dark alleyway in the dead of night.

He'd like for it to have been a completely unprecedented situation. Maybe then it would actually be less frightening. But it reminded him so much of that incident that he immediately dropped dead still, stopped breathing and closed his eyes, trying to concentrate on what he could hear.

Because this—the only way to make sense of this—was some kind of kidnapping. Because people didn't just wake up in dark alleyways in the dead of night with no memory of why they were there and no hangover…

…and certainly small children didn't, either.

And people who took small children who were willing to dump them in alleyways very rarely intended nice things for them.

Not that Shin'ichi was a small child, he hated considering himself a small child, it'd be the end of him if he called himself a small child, but he hadn't spent the last six months exactly being the big fish in the little pond. He hadn't spent the last six months deliberately socialising himself to be a small child. He hadn't lived just to be found out that easily.

So, small child, in an alley, underneath a literal red light, at the dead of night. Okay.

It smelt like blood out here.

Like the grass had smelt.

Like his mouth had tasted.

Come on, think. Shin'ichi tried to listen to himself. Get a hold of your surroundings.

Beyond the fog, he couldn't hear anything particularly unusual for this kind of place. Throbbing bass from the building behind him, masked between two or three walls; one open window, way up high, with some kind of radio chatter; the distant sound of footfalls and engines to his left. Engines above, too. Possibly a flight path.

As far as he could tell, there was nobody close by on the ground paying any attention to him, just the patter of rain on the concrete. And if they were ever coming back… it'd probably be better to get the heck outta here before they did. Figure out where he was from the buildings, maybe; at the very least, he might find a cop. He was clearly in public, after all.

A few seconds later, a six-year-old boy tore onto the main street, scanning the crowd for any sign of a familiar dark uniform, and failing to find one.

She was having a rather nice time this night. The air was cool but it certainly wasn't freezing like the time of year would suggest. Her tail wagged back and forth as she had a massive smile on her face.

And then this kid randomly sprinted out of an alleyway and looked around frantically. Okay either this kid was lost, kidnapped and escaped or... Possibly from another world. Either way, frantic children are without protection. A sigh. Leave him be... Or try to go up and talk to the child?

"Ah, I'll hate myself if I don't help..." She says to herself before looking up and calling out. "Hey, kid!" Lupa tried to catch his attention as she began to move closer to him.

At the sound of her voice, every hair on the back of Shin'ichi's neck suddenly stood… a bit straighter than it already did.

"A-ah, su-sorry–!" he spluttered, looking back at the strange girl. His face immediately flushed bright red when he noticed what she was wearing.

An animal ear headband and exposed bra… Well, I'm in that kind of area, he said to himself, noting the signs around him. But I bet if I say that, I'm gonna stop looking so cute.

"A-um, hello, lady, do you know where I am?" he said in his highest-pitched 'little brother' voice. "You see, I think I'm lost an—"

The tail suddenly swished into view from behind her legs.

Did… did that just move on its own?

"U-Wow, lady, that's so cool!" he chirped, running over to her legs. "It's like you're a kitty or something! Is it electric?"

This was so embarrassing, but if he didn't do it, it'd be weirder.

"Woah, woah, calm down." Lupa bent down so that her head was closer to him. "Err, actually the tail and ears are real." She tried to smile.

"I'm sorry to ask, do you know where your parents might be? Or anything like that?" The ears on her head twitched as she turned her head away from the child for a moment. She was certainly not used to small children. "Also, I'm a wolf."

"Eh."

How…

'Also, I'm a wolf.'

How on earth did anybody just say they were a wolf?

Was he supposed to just buy that? Nod, smile, say 'yes, you are a wolf' even though she very plainly was not?

The evidence wasn't really entirely discounting it, but they weren't really proving it either. There were plenty of folks in Shinjuku who worked on their cosplays, and he knew plenty of people who were good at make-up. It didn't seem quite as discountable to say that she just had a good costume on as it did to agree she was a wolf.

Because, until further notice, being a talking, mostly furless, bra-wearing, human-looking wolf was not really possible by all known laws of Earth, be they biology or… physics, or… etymology, or…

And emotive prosthetics were just coming onto the market, weren't they? And as unlikely as it was that she had them, it was still more possible than completely impossible.

Maybe she was just getting heavily into character?

Maybe somebody was into that…?

Shaking his head, he replied, "N-no, I don't know where my parents are! Do you know where I can find a police officer?"

"Ah, uh..." She thought a moment. "Well, I only just arrived in this City so... I don't exactly know where things are in this place yet." Lupa stood back up straight.

She sighed... The confusion on the kid's face was pretty evident. "Um... Okay, let me try that explanation thing again..." Her ears flattened against her head for a moment before perking up. "But before I do... Where are you from?"

'Explanation thing'…?

"I'm from Beika City in Tokyo!" he said, wondering if he should actually be lying instead. "Where are you from if you're not from here, lady?"

"Beika city... Tokyo, Japan?" Lupa brought her hand to her chin and thought... "Japan... Japan... I swear I've heard of that b- oh! Ah... I shouldn't be thinking outloud." Her ears were standing up straight. 300 years since she had actually heard the name 'Japan.' yeah, that long.

Her tail wagged back and forth. "Alright, do you recognize the area you are in?" She wanted to make sure this kid wasn't actually from the City or something... Granted to be so young and moving...

"Well, anyway, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you aren't from this City, are you? You're no where near your home, nor even close to Japan." A blink. How to prove it... What was this kid's world like? She looked down at the child, looking him over once. At least modern times?

She'd 'heard of' Japan… before.

…Unusual… And the fake tail was still swishing about, even though they were still having a very serious conversation. Maybe she was going at this wolf-person identity a little hard.

If she wasn't so clearly an adult he'd consider playing along with her more seriously, but as it was, he could only stand there in a little disbelief at her attitude.

As well as his situation.

"Uh, no. I guess I'm not from around here…" he said. "What's this city called, lady?"

He was staring at her tail, wasn't he? Lupa internally shrugged. "From what I've gathered in the past two days since I arrived... It doesn't have one."

"Uh..." She looked away a little and whispered under her breath. "What the fuck am I supposed to do with this child... I mean, I can't just..." She muttered the rest. Lupa reached down to grab the child's hand.

"Alright, could you tell me your name? I'm Lupa."

"It doesn't have one?"

Okay, so she was definitely not from around here. If he had to take a guess, she might've also been exactly as lost as he was.

Which was concerning.

To say the least.

He accepted her hand, though with a hint of trepidation. Nice as she was being, he still didn't know enough about her to trust her instinctively. He'd met plenty of 'nice' people who'd actually turned out to be kind of terrible. And he didn't know how he'd gotten here. And if she was lying—

—which he was sure she had to be, at least a little, because girls were just not wolves–

—then there was a chance she was just making this all up and was actually involved in all of this. Not instantly knowing about Japan while she was easily conversing with a little Japanese boy was suspicious as all get-out.

Still, he had no guarantee his second shot would be so lucky, in a place like this, at this time of night.

"I'm Edogawa Conan. It's nice to meet you, Miss Lupa," he said.

She blinks once... Okay, since the first word of that was so many syllables... She'll just call the kid 'Conan'. Much simpler, yes.

"Alright, if anything bad happens, I want you to run away, as fast as you can." Lupa states as if 'bad things' are somewhat common? Well, it was the dead of night and the people she walked past were giving her unfriendly stares... But she tried not to pay attention to that as she tried to find the nearest police station. If you looked at them it would only possibly cause more trouble, right?

"... Wish I had a cellphone or something..." Lupa mutters quietly. At least that way she could pull up a map or something.

Confused, Shin'ichi simply gave her a nod.

He kept close to her as they walked, hand wedged firmly within hers. He could feel the eyes of the citizens on the back of his neck. Maybe just because of the strangeness of the situation—what was a young woman doing leading an obviously unrelated little boy around the adult entertainment district, anyway?

But the eyes—they were just as much on him as they were on Lupa. If it were just a normal concern, then it wouldn't feel quite as…

Maybe this was actually the kidnapper's plan. Dump him in the most dangerous part of town where it felt like everybody was out for blood and just wait.

…No. Didn't make sense. No guarantee that anything would happen.

Unless, of course, the bad guy was Lupa, in which case he was almost definitely walking into a trap. He'd even just allowed her direct control over his body.

Out of the corner of his glasses, Shin'ichi snuck a look at the people walking past. Gritted teeth, pulsing temples…

And then one of them turned and he knew that wide-eyed glare. He'd seen it before.

On that man.

Shit, he thought, moving closer to Lupa. Looks like there's no choice.

She felt the child move a bit closer to her. Lupa took in a deep breath and slowly let it out over several seconds. Get in a fight... And get the police set on her or... Just keep walking. Carefully avoiding running into people. It would be best to avoid a fight with the kid in trail... Yeah. Even though her tail twitched in clear anticipation of a fight.

She got to an intersection and stopped... Just... Where was the damn po- was it that place?

Well, he hadn't expected something very local, but the police station they were now approaching was a breath of fresh air. It seemed like they'd crossed the threshold into the normal public zone—far less busy, with only a few people who were walking their dogs or exiting theatres—but even so it was still a breath of fresh air. The entire building seemed to glow with a warm, inviting light, and a knot in the back of his throat seemed to unwind as he looked.

He'd been hoping, though, that he might be able to figure out where he was from the sign; alas, no luck. He couldn't recognise the language the sign was written in, and what he somehow figured it read, 'Toytown', wasn't a place on Earth, let alone the name of the city.

He led Lupa forward this time, inside the building and through the friendly waiting room to the front desk, and peered over as best as he could at his height. A boxy, beige computer monitor and tower were visible over the edge, and the cork-board had a web of indecipherable notices attached to it. He could just see the tight-haired receptionist down to her brow.

"Excuse me," he said, "lady? Can I talk to you?" He tugged on Lupa's hand as well, just in case.
